Reviving Michigan’s economy will continue to be Somerville’s top priority for hard working taxpayers in the 23rd District. The government does not create jobs, the private-sector does! We must continue to foster a competitive business environment that will attract small businesses by reforming our tax system, reducing onerous regulations, and applying uniform tax incentives. We must rid ourselves of picking “Winners and Losers.” Somerville has consistently voted against Corporate Welfare. He will continue to fight to keep taxes low and fair. Adam Smith said it best, “taxes should be levied only to support a limited government and should satisfy four maxims: equity, transparency, convenience, and efficiency.”

Budget/State Spending:

The sole purpose of collecting taxes is to finance the core functions of state government. Somerville and his colleagues led the fight to close a $1.5 billion deficit through sweeping spending reforms and were able to put $700 million into savings accounts and paying down long-term debt. We finished the entire process the earliest it has been done in three decades. We must continue to be good stewards of the taxpayer’s money. Our hardworking taxpayers have a right to know where and how their money is being spent. Somerville will continue to lead the charge to create a more transparent and accountable budget.


Our children need an excellent education in order to compete in the knowledge economy and to ensure that they experience a high quality of life. Somerville is committed to putting students first and focusing the system on academic progress. The bloated bureaucracy is compromising the investment for the future of our children. We cannot succeed if we ignore the most important part of education, the kids! That is why Somerville voted against the plan to cut funding for our K-12 schools.


“We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness.” Somerville believes that life in all of its forms and stages is a gift from God and it should be cherished, honored, and protected. Somerville will always fight to protect the rights of the unborn.

Pro-Second Amendment:

“A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.” Gun laws don’t deter criminals, but they do disarm law-abiding citizens. This makes them easier targets, easier to attack, and eventually leads to the end of individual freedom. Thomas Paine said, “Arms discourage and keep the invader and plunderer in awe, and preserve order in the world as well as property.” Somerville will fight to keep and protect our Second Amendment rights.
